Kasa Kunda —

In Kasa Kunda, a village with around 3,000 people in The Gambia, we decide together with the VDC (Village Development Committee) which projects should be implemented. We have launched various projects with the aim of improving living conditions and creating jobs. It is important to us that we try out and experiment together to see what really works, as this enables us to bring successful projects to other villages later on.

It is important to us that we try out and experiment together to see what really works, as this enables us to bring successful projects to other villages later on.

bus project —

The project was launched at the end of 2019 with the aim of creating a source of income and a job by purchasing a transport bus. The income will be used to pay running costs such as diesel or repairs and the bus driver’s salary. Everything else that is earned is donated to the Kassa Kunda community. There are plans to purchase more buses. The money generated so far and your donations will be used to implement further projects for Kassa Kunda in close cooperation with the VDC.

women’s house —

Pregnant women are visited by a midwife every month. The visit and the associated examinations currently often take place outside, in dusty courtyards, with poor to no hygiene measures and no privacy. We would like to use your donations and the proceeds from the bus project to create a closed room that will enable these check-ups to take place in a quiet and hygienic environment. The old empty mosque is currently being fitted with a roof and will be used for this purpose in the future. A start has been made, but there is still a lot to do!

library project —

Education is a valuable asset, but the school alone cannot satisfy the thirst for knowledge that exists among the children and adults of Kassa Kunda. We are planning to build a library on the grounds of the local school. It is to be stocked with specialist and non-fiction books, as well as books for children and young people (there are still a lot of colonial school books, which we would like to counteract). Furthermore, in future there will also be the opportunity to carry out internet research in a room in the library. But this is only step 2 of this project.

GARDEN FENCE PROJECT

Food is expensive in The Gambia and a garden enables families to provide for themselves at least to some extent or to sell what they have grown themselves at the market. The future garden of the families living in the village is currently still unused wasteland. It is an area of around eighty hectares belonging to the community.

Before it can be used for farming, much still needs to be done, starting with a wall to surround the area and protect it from unauthorized access and from free-range cows, sheep, goats and pigs.

An access road to the site is also missing, as is one or more wells on the site.
